FUNCTION

What does NEBOSH do?

NEBOSH creates and awards health, safety and environmental qualifications designed to help improve competence in
workplace health, safety and environmental management.

GIC1

Management of health and safety

GIC1 is assessed as an open book examination. Learners must apply health and safety management knowledge to the task rather than copying sources.

GIC2

Risk assessment

GIC2 is a practical assessment carried out through workplace risk
assessment and action planning.

PASS STANDARDS

Pass marks and pass standards

GIC1 and GIC2 do not use the same pass mark.

GIC1 provisional pass mark

45% is listed as the provisional pass mark for GIC1. Because NEBOSH uses an awarding process, learners should always check current official or Learning Partner quidance for assessment-specific details.

GIC2 pass standard

0 marks out of 100 is the GIC2 pass mark. GIC2 is marked as Pass at 60% or higher and Refer at 59% or lower.

Important note

Do not compare GIC1 and GIC2 as if they are the same assessment. GIC1 is an open book examination. GIC2 is a practical assessment.

QUALIFICATION GRADE

Pass, credit and distinction

NEBOSH’s Learning Partner guide states that the qualification grade is based on the result from Unit GIC1, while
learners must pass both GIC1 and GIC2 to receive the qualification.

Both units matter

Both GIC1 and GIC2 must be passed to achieve the qualification.

Grade is GIC1-based

The final qualification grade is based on the GIC1 result

GIC2 is Pass/Refer

GIC2 supports qualification achievement but does not count toward the grade band.

RESULTS AND NOTIFICATIONS

Results timeline and Unit Result Notification

Results are issued through official NEBOSH result processes. Learners should rely on NEBOSH and their Learning
Partner, not unofficial result predictions.

Results timing awareness

For certificate digital assessments, NEBOSH states that results are issued 60 working days from the examination date, with stated exceptions for some units. Results are sent to the email address registered to the learner record.

Do not hard-code future date tables into the page unless there is maintenance process.

Unit Result Notification

A Unit Result Notification may show the unit, description, mark, status, exam/submission date, expected results date and qualification outcome information, depending on the qualification and unit.

RESULT OUTCOMES

What pass, refer and void mean

Pass

A pass means the required standard has been achieved for that unit. Continue to the remaining unit or qualification outcome.

Refer

A refer means the required pass standard was not achieved. Speak with the Learning Partner about resit and preparation improvement.

Void

A void result can occur where a practical assessment result is not valid or accepted. Learners should contact the Learning Partner quickly for route-specific support.

AFTER A REFER

Resits and five-year unit validity

A refer result is not the end of the route. It means the learner needs a clearer next step.

Resit awareness

  • Identify which unit received a refer result.
  • Review available quidance and weak areas.
  • Speak to the Learning Partner about resit registration.
  • For GIC1, use the Open Book Assessment Guide and Study Plan.
  • For GIC2, use the Risk Assessment Practical Guide and Template Guide.

Five-year validity awareness

NEBOSH says learners must obtain a pass in all units within a five-year period to achieve the qualification. If additional time is needed, learners should contact the Learning Partner to discuss possible unit-validity options.

RESULT ENQUIRY

Enquiry About Result / remark awareness

A result enquiry is not the same as a resit.

When an EAR may be relevant

If a learner believes their result does not meet reasonable expectations, NEBOSH supports eligible requests through the Enquiries About Results process. NEBOSH states that requests must be submitted within 20 working days from the results notification date.

What learners should know

  • An Enquiry About Result is not automatic.
  • It has a deadline.
  • It may involve a clerical check or remark.
  • It does not provide performance feedback.
  • There is no guarantee that a mark will increase.
  • A mark may also be adjusted downwards.

PREPARATION ROUTES

What to do before assessment

Preparation reduces confusion later. Learners should understand both knowledge and logistics.

Before GIC1

  • Read the NEBOSH Open Book Assessment Guide.
  • Understand scenario-based assessment.
  • Practise applying knowledge to workplace scenarios.
  • Use resources ethically.
  • Avoid copy-paste answers. .
  • Prepare your assessment environment.

Before GIC2

  • Read the NEBOSH Risk Assessment Practical Guide.
  • Understand hazard vs risk.
  • Practise risk assessment.
  • Separate existing controls from further controls.
  • Use hierarchy of controls.
  • Avoid copied or ready-made reports.

Before both units

  • Read the Study Plan.
  • Check current syllabus and 2026 update.
  • Confirm assessment process with your Learning Partner.
  • Check technical and submission guidance.
  • Prepare early instead of waiting until the final week

WARNINGS

Common learner misunderstandings

"GIC1 and GIC2 have the same pass mark."

They do not. GIC1 has a 45% provisional pass mark, while GIC2 passes at 60 marks out of 100.

"Final grade is based on both units equally."

NEBOSH states the qualification grade is based on GIC1, while both units must be passed.

"A result enquiry guarantees a better mark."

It does not. A mark may stay the same, increase or decrease aftera result enquiry.

"A refer means I should panic."

A refer means the pass standard was not achieved. Speak with the Learning Partner about resit and improvement.

"Open book means I can copy."

Open book allows resources, but answers must be original, relevant and applied to the task.

"A pass guarantee is realistic."

No ethical guide should promise a pass, grade or result outcome.
